Product Summary: This antique U.S. postal cover features an 1864 U.S. George Washington 3 cent stamp, from Scott #65 catalog number in a dull red hue.
Marked Bridgewater, Vt, and with a Jersey City, N.J. stamp with a date of September 3, 1864. This George Washington, 3 cent stamp, was produced by the National Bank Note Company that produced U.S. stamps from 1861-1872. The National Bank Note company was formed from the merger of seven printing and engraving companies, and many saw this as an attempt to create a monopoly within the industry.
What made this company even more unique was that it was comprised of some of the most exceptional talents in the nation. Cyrus Durand who produced designs on banknotes, Joseph Pease who was the portrait engraver, James Smillie who was the picture engraver, Joseph Ourdan also a portrait engraver, William Marshall another portrait engraver, and William Nichols and George Thurber artists who produced engraving design and lettering.
The National Bank Note Company produced many types of bank currency as well and eventually won the bid to print U.S. postage making their mark on U.S. philately history, such as the example included herein.
