Product Summary: This example of Japanese Arita ware dates to the Meiji era 1868-1912. It is decorated in an underglaze cobalt blue design with a café au lait monotone glazed rim. The botanical and fruit designs that ornament the interior rim add for a playful theme. The underside “Fuku” or “happiness” symbol decorated the center underside.
Arita ware, produced in the city of Arita Japan has origins dating to the 17th century when the production of porcelain first began in Japan. The production of porcelain in Japan was originally introduced by Korean potters living in the country. Arita has always been produced exclusively for export to Europe and Southeast Asian markets, as it imitated the design of Chinese ceramics in a western form.
